Elliss made the Associated Press, AFC A, Football Writers, Scripps-Howard and UPI top teams. m Quarterback Mike McCoy and center Lance Scott were behind the No. 1 scoring team in the WAC. McCoy was a second-team All- American and Scott made the all-WAC first F R E E D O M BOWL C H A M P I O NS itk ute outlook Utah coach Ron McBride and staff brushed up plenty on their nurturing and teaching skills in spring drills. Lucky thing, because they'll need those skills as much as their coaching abilities come fall. Greeting the coaches in August will be a roster comprised of 62 percent underclassmen and junior college transfers. Even more striking is the whopping 27 freshmen-32 percent of the total squad size. Gone from last year's 10-2, victorious Freedom Bowl team are 15 of 22 starters, 32 lettermen, a first-team Ail-American and seven first-team all-WAC picks. In a word, experience. No wonder McBride assesses his 1995 team as such: "We are so young that every day is absolutely critical for the players' growth. Experience will be the best teacher with this team. It's a team that will take a step each day." It is also a team that must learn to run before it crawls. Utah tips its cradle of youngsters into a schedule that opens with a pair of Pac-10 powers- defending champion Oregon on Sept. 2, then Stanford week later. From there, the Utes jump right into Western Athletic Conference play. McBride acknowledges the growing pains ahead. But he warns that his baby faced Utes will apply some hurt of their own. "We won't have time to mature into our football team. We start right out with Oregon, which won the Pac-10 and played in the Rose Bowl. Then, we play Stanford, which has a veteran team coming back. But we learned in the spring that we have the potential to be a very physical football team, especially on the defensive side. We know the areas where we need to develop talent and we know who we will count on right away. We also discovered that all these guys expect to win and expect to be good." The Utes won't need to leave home too often to chase their expectations. For just the second time in school history (the other fell in 1949), the Utes look forward to a seven-game home schedule. Another relative rarity lies ahead for Utah observers. For the first time of the Ron McBride era, the Ute staff features new coordinators on both the offensive and defensive sides. With the promotion of Fred Graves to offensive coordinator and Kyle Whittingham to defensive Senior Henry Lusk was granted a hardship year after breaking his shoulder blade last fall. He was offensive MVP of the 1993 Freedom Bowl. coordinator, McBride hints at some style changes ahead. "These coaches relate very well to the players and the players will follow them," says McBride. "Offensively, we'll be a better running team than in the past, so you'll see more play action. Defensively, we may be a little more aggressive in our approach to the game, with more blitzes and things like that," McBride adds. Offensively and defensively, here's what the Utes look like, position by position, in 1995: "Jones had a bit of a lead going into the final scrimmage, but Fouts had a real good scrimmage and put himself back up there," confirms McBride. Despite the photo finish in April, a winner will be declared before the 1995 season opener. "We will not platoon. Absolutely not. We WJ7Z have a quarterback," stresses McBride. Sophomore Ryan Shea, who equalled the number of snaps taken by the two frontrunners in the spring, showed great improvement but will likely remain the third stringer for a second year. All three offer different skills. "Jones is really smart, knows the offense well and is a good leader. Fundamentally, he has a good grasp of what is going on; he needs to just quicken his release and his feet a little," says McBride. "Fouts has quick feet, a strong arm and good velocity on the ball. The more reps he gets under center, the better he gets. Shea has a very strong arm, good feet and is very mobile. He needs to get a more complete mastery of what we're doing and improve his concentration skills." Name Fouts Jones Shea Quarterbacks (1994 totals, where applicable) Yr. Hgt. Wgt Att. Crop. Yds Int. Of the trio now vying for McCoy's vacated post, only one contributed to that remaining percentage point: Brandon Jones, who played in four games last year, attempted six passes, completing two. But Jones, groomed to replace McCoy, found himself in a dogfight for the starting position with redshirt junior Mike Fouts during spring drills. Although Jones held the No. 1 spot for most of the spring, Fouts goes into fall camp as a slight favorite after a sparkling performance in the final spring scrimmage. OFFENSIVE LINE/TIGHT ENDS "Grown ups" are in short supply down the line. Gone are all-WAC seniors Lance Scott, Anthony Brown, Roy Ma'afala and Kaniela Neves (the first two made first-team). Up front, graduation claimed all but one starter-senior right tackle Chris Rae. And not just the starting lineup took a hit: Only two members of the entire front five two-deep remain-Rae and 1994 backup Chad Ventriglia, who will start at left tackle as a senior this fall. Thankfully, the tight end position avoided the mass evacuation. Still on the squad is starting tight end Rick Tucker and his 1994 backups- Chris Jahries and Derrick Marston. Junior Jeff Jex, who missed spring ball following surgery, also lends experience here. "The line has to mature as a group," understates McBride. "No question, we're inexperienced. F R E E D O B O W L C H A M P I O NS ik ute outlook Chris Rae gives you a real solid player at right tackle and he needs to lead the group, as does Rick Tucker." They'll lead a collection of redshirts and newcomers. Of the former, redshirt freshmen Todd Jackson and Josh Cochran came out of spring ball 1-2 at left guard. Underclassmen like Danny Davis, Jay Link and Cam Styles should settle in the top two or three at guard and tackle. As for the newcomers, McBride says, "Some guys coming in simply must make a difference." He points specifically to junior college center Chad Folk, who will join the team in August. "Chad Folk is the best guy in the country that we could have gotten to play center," raves McBride. "He's a tough, hard-nosed football player with strength and size." McBride prizes his other center candidates, as well. "Folk, (redshirt freshman) Darren Walker and a kid like (true freshman) Brett Cook could give us a real solid group at center. Kevin Dyson, who made "The Catch" that won the Freedom Bowl, will start at one wide receiver spot. As a freshman last year, Dyson finished third behind Marsh and Claiborne in receiving, with 24 catches for 339 yards and two touchdowns. Another "known" is senior Henry Lusk. Lusk, who gained an extra year of eligibility after breaking his shoulder blade in the preseason last year, caught 42 passes in 1993. Listed as the starter at slot back for the upcoming season, Lusk will also line up at wide receiver, fullback and tight end. Wherever he is, he'll pull down plenty of passes. Terence Keehan, also in charge of the punting duties, and David Kozlowski, a proven receiver currently awaiting medical clearance, are two other known quantities. But what could take this position to the next level for Utah is a big time recruiting class. "The receiving corps will gain a lot of athleticism come fall," says McBride. Senior Rob Hamilton carried the ball a team-high 117 times last year and will start at fullback. Senior Henry Lusk will also play fullback in some sets. The strongest player on the team, Lusk will run the ball considerably more than the four times he carried it two years ago, according to McBride. "Henry is a threat any place he lines up, and he offers us a tremendous number of positives- both as a player and a leader. He will carry the ball plenty this year," promises McBride. At running back, watch for Juan Johnson to vie for all-WAC honors. As a true freshman last year, the powerful back rushed for 320 yards and five touchdowns in an injury-shortened season. Johnson completed spring ball without showing any signs of the hamstring injury that pulled him from five games in 1994. "Juan had an exceptionally good spring," says McBride. "He is a big explosive guy who will be a major player now that he's healthy." Although the veteran trio makes this position a rarity on an otherwise young U. club, newcomers will nonetheless impact it. "We picked up two great freshmen in Omar Bacon and Chris Ma'afala," says McBride about two of the more highly recruited athletes to sign with Utah last February. The duo lends different styles to the U. package. Bacon is "a big version of (former Ute) Pierre Jones," says McBride. "He weighs 190 pounds, but has that kind of quickness and elu-siveness." As for Ma'afala, a relative of former Ute all-WAC offensive guard Roy Ma'afala, "Chris is a big strong guy who plays like (former Ute) Jama! Anderson," says McBride. Leading the way is sophomore Jason Hooks, a backup on the strong side last year, who will plug the middle this fall. Backing up Hooks is Jacinto "Juice" Peterson. Both looked outstanding in spring drills, according to McBride. On the strong side, Chris Godfrey and Anthony Hearns waged a war in spring, with Godfrey coming out on top. Freshman Kautai Oleavao, a blue chipper from Hawaii, could shake things up again come fall. At "will" linebacker, junior college transfer Mark Livingston gets the starting nod over hard-hitting Dave Cunningham, a junior letterman. Both plan on seeing plenty of playing time. Somewhere in the mix look for senior Jeff Kirkman, a 59-tackle contributor last year. Kirkman is pencilled in as a backup at strong safety, but he will roam the field on most defensive snaps-frequently from linebacker turf. In addition to Oleavao, newcomers who could step right in and play include juco transfer Armand Boglin and freshman Taulia Lave. DEFENSIVE LINE This group could be a class bully, given its size. At left tackle, big 292-pound Toele Fa'amoe, back from a redshirt year, showed tremendous capabilities in the spring. His likely backups-first-year sophomore Pene Talamaivao and junior Mike Wilson-weigh in at 293 and 295 pounds, respectively. At right tackle, one of the finest defenders in the WAC returns in senior Henry Kaufusi, a mobile 270- pounder who totalled five sacks last year. Junior college transfer Vince Tauanuu could be the guy who spells Kaufusi, assuming the 290- pounder lives up to the coaches' expectations. At the ends, it is experience that comes in large sizes. Jeff Kaufusi, a lanky 6-foot-6 left end, will start for a second straight year. Nate Kia, a part-time starter at right end last year, is fully recovered from the knee injury that shortened his sophomore year, and will challenge to back up Kaufusi. The two combined for eight sacks and six tackles for loss last year. The backup situation looks equally as strong. Michael Baulkman, a powerful junior college transfer who redshirted last season, will back up Jeff Kaufusi. Chad Kauhaahaa, sidelined with an injury last year, participated in spring ball and won the right to back up Kia. "Size wise, our defensive line will match up with anybody's," says McBride. Replacing all- WAC corner Kareem Leary is Calbert Beck-the MVP of the Freedom Bowl for his game-breaking 72-yard kickoff return. Beck, in limited time at corner last year, intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Replacing all-WAC strong safety Ernest Boyd is a twosome: Brandon Dart and Jeff Kirkman give Utah a couple of different looks. Dart is a rangy 6-footer, while Kirkman's 6-foot-2, 222-pound girth allows him to also slide up to linebacker. Free safety stands pat, where junior Harold Lusk will start for a second year. Lusk returned four interceptions a total of 184 yards (most in the WAC)-one for a TD. He also broke up six passes. At left corner, little Clarence Lawson (5-8,175), packs a powerful punch.
