Roles Played by Combustion Equipnents I t cannot be denied that the installation of a continuous caster adjacent to a hot rolling mill has been traditionally considered essential to realize any CC-HDR process. The roles the integrated slab temperature compensation technology played in the real ization of the remte CC-HDR process were: 1) developnent and application of key heat equipnent techniqueS; and 2) developnent and application of an integrated slab temperature simulation model that can quantify the integrated dynamic characteristics of slabs between the caster and mi 11 and can accurately predict the slab temperature history. Key high-temperature equipnent techniques -may be roughly divided into those for producing high- temperature slabs on the caster, thennally insulating as-cast slabs in transi t, and heating slab edges prior to hot roll ing. In the developnent and application of these high-tanperature equipment techniques, off-line tests of production scale Were conducted as well as on-line tests to verify the thennal characteristics, durabili ty, and other details of the equipnent. The integrated slab temperature simulation model calculates the transverse temperature distribution of the slab by a two-dimensional unsteady-state heat transfer equation, or &I.
