Show Gas Reburning - Low NOx Burners • Wall Fired Boiler Cherokee Station, Unit 3, a 158 MW unit owned and operated by Public Service Company of Colorado. Together, these two projects will provide data on application of GR to all major utility boiler firing configurations. The objective is to provide a data base which will: (1) demonstrate the emission control, performance impacts and cost effectiveness for three specific units, and (2) provide a data base for projecting performance to the full range of coal fired utility boilers. Both projects have similar three-phase structures: • Phase 1 -- Design This is the site specific design of the GR-SI and GR- LNB systems. The GR system is integrated wi th the compat i b 1 e control technologies. This Phase culminates in a complete engineering design, construction plan, and field evaluation plan for the remainder of the project. . • . Phase 2 -- Installation Following approval of the Phase 1 plans by all project participants, the GR-SI and GR-LNB systems are installed on the Host Uni ts. Most of the i nsta 11 at i on work is completed during scheduled outages. Then, the units are returned to service and all components are checked out. • Phase 3 -- Testing The GR-SI and GR-LNB systems are tested over 18 month periods. The first six months of testing involve extensive parametric tests which define the optimum operating settings and provide detailed data over a range of operating conditions. These data establish the operating conditions for normal commercial service. Then, the units are operated by plant personnel for one year over the usual duty cycle. The testing team is on site to monitor performance only. This provides a comprehensive evaluation of the technology under normal utility operating conditions. These projects are now in progress. The GR-SI system for the tangential fi red un it was i nsta 11 ed fi rst. The i nsta 11 at i on has been completed and the initial tests of the GR system are in progress. Sorbent Injection testing will begin shortly. The GR-SI system on the cyclone is under construction and startup is scheduled for Fall 1991. The GR-LNB system for the wall fired boiler is also under construction with startup scheduled for Summer 1992. DESIGNS AND PERFORMANCE PROJECTIONS Gas Reburning - Sorbent Injection The GR-SI designs for the two host units are illustrated in Figure 3. These injection configurations are highly site specific and are based on a detailed engineering study. This includes baseline tests to establish general operational parameters, fabrication and testing of a scale model for isothermal flow tests, combustion and heat transfer modeling, and projections of NOx' S02 and boi 1 er performance. Confi gurat ions appropri ate for other boi 1 er des i gns could be substantially different. 6 |
