The arrow was so deeply imbedded in the skull ofthe horse, that it could not be remoTed until the settlements were reached, when it was extracted with a pair ot blacksmith's shoing pinch~rs. The battle was soon over. Th.er Indians were ei~er killed or scattered, and - I - when Captain Andrus called his ·men together none were missing, nothwithstandiila the otubborn resistance of the en~, and man;y hairbreadth escapes. \ In the summer ot 1866, Capte.in .Andrus was called w1 th a Company ot men 1 to learn it there were 8JQ' crosoii,gs ot tho Colorado used by the Indians in j the stretch ot country trom the Busckskin Mountains to the Junction ot the Green and Grand rivers. The Company was mustered into service August 16~ On August 19, the Compa.Q set out on their long and adventurous expedition a:tter the Indians. The exped-ition consisted of 63 men, 95 horses, 63 saddles, 61 rifles, 98 revolvers, 4213 pounds and 4629 pounds ot lead. On this expedition one or their men was killed, Elijah Everett, J'r., while still a boy riding the range. James Andrus was elected Lt. Colonel ot the First Regiment Cavalry on the 22nd or February 1866 and commissioned by Acting Governor Edwin H1gg•na on the 15th of April the same year. In November of 1871, Jacob Hamblin met the Navajoe Indians, principally Chief Defiance, and concluded a Treaty of Peace with him. Chief Walker visited Captain Andrus at his home attar the Treaty ot Peace and they beoeme good .triends, he told Captain Andrus that they had tried more than~ one thing to kill him, realizing he was the most successful one in det~ating their Jm'PO-•• ~ :,., , ~- ..Ji........,..__ ~ ... - - · In 1869 James Andrus made a trip :rrom Los Angeles.
