VIRGINIA HOVJELL ELvmA MANFUL Ogden , Utah Weber County August 25 , 1939 James William Walker of Farmington , Davis County , Utah , was born in Ogden , Utah on April 21 , 1860. His parents , James and Rebecca Ekins Walker , crossed the plains with Captain Mart in ' s last hand- cart company in 1856 . They made the trip late in the season and encountered snow and cold weather . Mr. Walker had his feet frozen and later was taken ill and his wife , Rebecca pulled him in the hand cart for a large part of the journey across the plains to Utah . They arrived in Ogden on November 26 , 1856 , having suffered all of the hardships of pioneer life . James Walker was employed on the farm of Lorin Farr for a few years and later succeeded in purchasing a small farm at Five Points , which he cultivated until his death . It was while Mr. and Mrs . Walker were living in a tenant cabin on the Lorin Farr Farm that James William Walker 'WBS born . He was their second child and he spent his childhood days on the Farr farm and later on his father ' s farm at ]~ive Points . He attended the neighborhood elementary schools but vre s forced to seek employment away from home in his early youth , because of the limited employment the small farm could supply . In the course of his quest for a livelihood he was employed as a ranch hand , and went to work on Antelope Island , then owned by John Dooly and White and Sons Company . His salary on this job amounted to $30 per month and board and lodgings . Antelope Island is the largest Island in the Great Salt Lake . On it are $everal large fresh water springs , which have been utilized as the basis for a large ranching industry . The gentle slopes afford large tracts of tillable ground on whioh _excellent dry farm crops of grain are raised . At threshing time men came over to the island from Farmington to help . |
