Show WPA Amy Carlina Davis Phillips -4- Born: Aug. 29, 1851. Mrs. Phillips' sister, Serrepta Davis, married Frank Warner a full bred Indian. In the Battle of Battle Creek the wineer of 1862-63 took place north west of Franklin about 14 miles on the Battle Creek not far from Bear River. A large band of Indians under Chief Bear Hunter, Pocatello and Sagewitch .encamped at the mouth of Battle Cree~ in a deep ravine. They began to steal from the settlers and became very bold. The settlers became much alarmed. In December, 1862, some miners were on their way from Montana to Logan for supplies and they were attacked by some of these Indians on Bear River West of Rieblnond and were killed. Colonel Edward P. Connor who was stationed at Fort Douglas upon hearing of the killing of the miners organized and outfitted an expedition and ~ame to Cache Valley to chastise the Indians. He was certain this band was some of the band which had killed some of the emigrants before on the Overland mail route. ~ The latter part of January, 1863, Colonel Conner came to Cache Valley with about 300 men consisting of infantry and cavalry. The weather was extremely cold. Forced marches had to be made January 29, 1863, in the early morning Connor attacked the Indians in the 7avines on Batt le Creek. After four hours the whole pan9 of Indians was nearly annihilated, over 250 ' ' being killed. Bear H . r and his squaw was killed, but C_hief P.o ello and Sagewitch got away . Colonel Connor's men, fourteen , were killed and forty nine were wounded. ~ There was much excitement in Cache Valley. After this battle the spirit of the Indians was broken. All the Indians that could swarm Bear River had escaped, but only a few women squaws that were wounded survived and a number of children. Two girls and one boy were adopted by people or Paradise. The two girls were adopted and lived until they were paswed sixteen or over and then passed away. The boy, Frank w8 rner, grew to manhood. |
