Leonard is a lifelong resident of Davis County. Four generations of his ancestors have lived in the county and have been contributing members of many of its communities. A graduate of Davis High School, he earned a doctorate in history at the University of Utah (1970). He has worked as a journalist, editor, and a research historian. Since 1979 he has been director of the LDS Museum of Church History and Art. Dr. Leonard has published articles and books on Utah, Mormon, and Western American history. He coauthored The Story of the Latter-day Saints (1976) with lames B. Allen. He has been an officer of the Utah Museums Association and other organizations and serves on the board of the Charles Redd Center. He was managing editor of the Utah Historical Quarterly and associate editor of the Journal of Mormon History. He and his wife, Karen, live in Farmington and are the parents of three sons.
