Show Acknowledgments L he writing of this book has involved many people. The Washington County Commission-Jerry Lewis, Gayle Aldred, and Russell Gallian-appointed a supervisory committee chaired by Loren Webb to select the authors and direct the project. Webb arranged the monthly meetings over three years and invited citizens throughout the county to come and share their knowledge. J. L. Crawford, Heber Jones, Dorothy Gardner, Laura Bowler, Lyman Hafen, and Helen Gardner served on that committee. They exercised a major influence on the project, including their many hours of reading the complete Washington County News. Cuba Lyle served as archives specialist and was tireless in directing us. All, including the authors, served without remuneration and have been superior advisors. Dixie College has been a steady supporter of this effort. We are indebted particularly to the staff of the Val A. Browning Library on the campus. Audrey Shumway, library director, Allyson Martin, archivist, and Rob Snow, academic computing, were particularly helpful. We express gratitude also to the staffs of the Harold B. Lee IX ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Library at Brigham Young University, the Marriott Library at the University of Utah, Southern Utah University Library, the LDS Family History Library in St. George, and the Utah State Historical Society library for help with source materials. Kent Powell and Craig Fuller of the Utah State Historical Society have been superior organizers of the larger Utah Centennial County History project of which this book is one part. They have been valued advisors and editors of our volume. Brian Reeve was a helpful research assistant. Lowell C. Bennion and Wayne Hinton were valued outside readers. As part of the research, we held hearings concerning several individual communities: Santa Clara, Ivins, New Harmony, Springdale, Rockville, Virgin, La Verkin, Hurricane, Gunlock, Toquerville, Pine Valley, Enterprise, Silver Reef, and the Shivwits Indian Reservation. We express gratitude to those who participated in the sessions. We also interviewed many living participants in Dixie's history. These included: John Allen, Art Anderson, Bart Anderson, Clayton Atkin, Sid Atkin, Nellie Ballard, Rhanee Ballard, Wilma Beal, Paul Beatty, Effie Beckstrom, Philip Bimstein, Lenny Brinkerhoff, Arnold Brownstein, Duane Blake, Craig Booth, Marion Bowler, Truman Bowler, Erma Bracken, Chapin Burks, Ken Campbell, Bill Clark, Ed Clark, Venese Clark, Alan Coombs, Clara Ruesch Cope, Wesley Dennett, Reva Emett, Stan Esplin, T.
