Show THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH RESEARCH POSTERS ON THE HILL 2007 "Mean Girls" Grown Up and the Silenced Side of Family Violence Pamela Murray and Don Herrin Department of Family and Consumer Studies My research explores the role of female aggression in family violence and why men don’t speak out against abuse. I undertake this research with the hope of bringing to light the connections between men’s silence when targeted by female aggressors as a function of personal and societal factors, the persistence of the transgenerational transmission of violence as a function of men’s silence and the pressing need for change in the societal norms of ignoring aggressive adult females and their victims, including their children who suffer both directly through abuse and neglect, and indirectly as witnesses of their fathers’ victimization. My review of previous pertinent research shows that this topic has a history over thirty years long. My review of current research shows no relief in sight. Clearly the time has come to address this too-long overlooked piece of the family violence cycle which begins in childhood. Unfortunately the rocky road of family violence is still well traveled. Hopefully, my research can continue and expand to include possible solutions including the creation of a path to healing.
