Show UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ABSTRACTS SPRING 200 The Flexagon Project Amber Heaton (Maureen O'Hara Ure) Department of Art and Art History University of Utah The flexagon project explores the use of foldable polygons as structures for printmaking. I am researching the four-faced tetraflexagon, a square-shaped structure that folds open to expose two hidden interior faces. Exposing inner layers forms a strong conceptual link to my work. This work explores human anatomy and the ways in which we hold experience and memory in the physical body. For this project, I am developing seven flexagons with imagery and text that correlate to regions of my body: my head, my eye, my mouth, my ear, my chest, my abdomen and my pelvis. Each flexagon acts as a self portrait that moves through external, internal and psychological layers of one of these regions. The flexagons are letterpress-printed from woodcuts, photopolymer relief plates and lead type. Each is hand bound. Maureen O'Hara,Ure 33 ¦» |
