MISSION PORTRAITS: The Mitchells When Caroline Yakey signed up for a course in Induct ive Logic in her senior year at Butler U ni versi ty, Indiana, she little thought that it would lead to marriage, three delightfu l chi ldren ... and housekeeping in a trailer in the heart of the Canyonlands of Utah! There she sat after class, quietly minding her own busi n ess, when a tall , dark man, wearing a black suit, walked over to her and stru ck up a conversa tion . Ian Douglas Mitchell had r('turned to Butler after two years at Nashotah House Semina ry in order to obtain his BA d egree. I t took only a few such conversations to convince the tall dark man and the small dark girl that THIS WAS IT, and they were married on May 24, 1958, two days after Father Mitchell graduated from Nashotah. On 21 June he was ordained Deacon at Christ Church Cathedral, and the following December he was ordained to th(' Priesthood at All Saints Church, Indianapolis, his home parish. Fat her Mitchell was curate of Trinity Church, Anderson, Indi a na, for nearly two years, then moved to Chicago where he was Vicar of St. An n 's Church for four years. In the meantime, a close boyhood fri end , Wayne Lorrai ne Pontious , had a lso grad ua ted from Nas hotah House and had become Vicar of St. Christopher'S Mission to the Navajo Indians in Bluff, Utah in 1962. Father Wayne was anxious to have his friend. come to share his ministry, and on August 23, 1964 Fath('r Mitchell and his family arrived at the Mission to take up their residence. Their two oldest children, Joseph and Mary, attend the Mission kindergarten school, and baby Julie helps her mother keep house in a 55-foot trailer. Composer of the American Folk Song Mass, which is now published by Hansen Music Publishers, Father Mitchell has a lso completed a fo lk music arrang('ment of the Magllljical and Te Dculll. He has appeared on TV and is curren tly working wi th the Episco pa l Radio and TV Foundation of Atlanta, Georgia, having composed the theme for the fo rthcoming TV series, "ONE REACH ONE." Father Mitchell feels th a t it is more than just a coincidence tha t two men, who have worked together, played together and understand each other so w(' ll, should both have felt a vocation to the priest hood and a re onee again working to gether in such a tremendously important work for Christ among the Navajo People. " I feel," he says, " th at God has been well pleased with what Father Liebler started and that he has ca used Father Wayne and me to come tog('ther to carryon this great work."
