Show centrals to me, the information was conveyed that 800 Indians were busy killing deer in the District of Douglas Creek. On that same morning the police were on their way to the district in which the hunting waa supposed to be taking place. Within the next few days all the Indians • returned, exceot Shavanaux, who was taken sick on his return and remained at Dragon until he recovered. In talkine with the Indians, they claimed to me that they 7. ere not hunting, but had just gone to that part of the country to visit their old home. This, of course, voas not true, and , from a3 accurate information as I can obtain, it seems that one deer was taken by the twelve Indians who 7/ere in the party. The statement of the lame and Pish Commissioner that "5hey usually have permit3 from Indian Agents" is in error- As near as I can learn, the Indians have not had permits to leave the reservation for several years. It is lust possible that some of these Indians have reserved old permits under date of several years ago, which they lave used to show to the deputies of Colorado. I instructed the farmers to inquire of the Indians in regard to permits and discover, if no33ible, if any old permits were in their possession; and no such permits have been discovered. •_. 4 - |
