Show . #13. law. Those who are getting married sinoe that time by the Indian way, should also be married aooording to the White man's way, so that their ohildren may.beoome their legal heirs. •- Some of these Indians have spoken to-day as though they thought their money wa3 lost. I want to- tell them that their money is not lost, but it is looked up in Washington safe. Under an old treaty, a long time ago, there was $500,000 put aside in the Treasury for all the Ute Indiana. That money was for all these Indians here, and also the Southern Utes in Colorado. Som3 of these Indians have been drawing their share of that money, and it makes $251-00 for each Indian. By another treaty there was another sum of money set asid^ and that was $1,250,000.00. That was for all these Indians here and al3o the Southern Utes. A few of these Indians hav9 drawn their shares of this fund and that is what they oall their "big money." The rest of it is there safa in Washington. It is the interest on this "big money1' that they get 9V9ry year in the form of annuity payment,- about $25.00 eaoh. ' After while there will be 3ome mora money for tha sala of their lands here on this reservation. I do not know how much that will be, for it has not yet all been paid in by the White people. This last money will belong to the Indians of thi3 reservation, and the Southern Utes will have no part in it. |
