Indian Agent, Uintah and Ouray Agenoy, Whiterocks, Utah. Sir: The Office is in receipt of your letter of January 18, wherein you Bay that the County Commissioners of Uintah County, State of Utah, are taking steps to open a State road from Vernal, Utah, westward across the former Uintah Indian Reservation, and have asked you if they have the right to cross Indian allotments under the laws of the State; that in your opinion, Buch right does not exist, even if the road be constructed on sections lines in accordance with the State lawsj but that it would be advantageous:to have the road constructed, being beneficial alike to white men and Indiana, and you request to be informed as to whether the State has authority to cross Indian allotments under the provisions of its own laws, and if not, that you be informed as to the possibility of obtaining consent from the Department for its construction. There are enclosed several copieB of rules and regulations dated- une 3, 1903, approved by the Secretary of the Interior June 11, 1903, governing the opening of public roads over Indian allotted lands. You will furnish oopieB of these rules |
