In short I believe it is time in the history of these tribes to imitate the trite order of General Grant to Sheridan at the battle of Five Forks and "Pitsh them." The matter of hunting in Colorado is exceedingly liable at any time to lead to open hostilities betioeen these tribes and the people of Colorado. The status of this matter is fully understood at the Indian Office from my former letters and reprort'i. Major Randlett, Post Commandant, being recently called upon for a report by the Department Commander , has fully corroborated and sustained my previous reports. Tiie liquor traffic,iphich may be said to have increased - at least in facilities for procuring it by Indians-rather than to have diminished since the advent of the troops is one of tite most annoying features of the work, and the civil authorities alone are unable to control it, and are wholly unable to deal with drunken Indians, at whose mercy former Agents loere exposed without any means of defense. The Indians are fully acquainted with the reasons for locating a body of soldiers at this point, and as soon as the soldiers are witlidrawn they will believe themselves licensed to again begin their work of intimidation and depre- |
