Si r: I have the honor to inform you that on the night ofyythe 11th instant J was informed by Major Randlett, Commandant at Fort Duchesne, that that Post was to be abandoned, and that the 12th of November was fixed as tho, date for removal. This move, although not altogether unexpected, was very surprising to me at this critical time in the affairs of these tribes, and I must hereby enter my most earnest protest against the move and ask tliat the Hon. Commissioner of Indian Affairs use his best efforts to have the order for removal countermanded. In my opinion, this should be made a six company post instead of being abandoned. Any rex is on that might have been urged for locating a military/ post among the Ute Indians, can now be urged with equal force for maintaining Fort DucJiesne. Besides which there are strong reasons why a military post should be maintained among the Utes, which did not exist when the post was established.
