Show m o 7 The detachment left the post on the morning of March 24, '•riving -in Venal, Utah, in the evening; distance travelled about 35 miles. March 25, by special instructions, Post Commander, Port DuChesne, received by courier, 6. A. M., the detachment scoured Ashley Valley in search of a deserter, as far as Jensen 7s Perry, Green River. Distance travelled about 25 miles. March 2Ah, to Andy Strong's Cabin near Colorado State Line, distance about 20 iles. March 27 to Rangely, Colorado, on White River at the mouth f Douglas Creek, distance about 30 miles. At this place we were met by "Colorow" and most of his sub-chiefs, also "McCook", "Agus-tine", "Charley Sharane" and many others of the principal Uncompah-gre Utes (with their following), that have been camping in this section of Colorado ever since their removal to the present reservation. After a long "talk" in which the object of my visit was fully and plainly explained to them, 1 decided to go down White River the following day in company with the Agent and Interpreter(leaving the detachment m camp at Rangely until our return) in search of the monuments defining the line of the reservation. Accordingly March. 28th, we proceeded down White River as far as the Camp of the Engineering party of the Colorado Midland Railway, distance about 15 miles. March 29, accompanied, by a Mr- Poote, foreman of the Engineering party, we proceeded about 15 miles further down the river, and finally, after a very thorough search we succeeded in finding what .appeared to be trie remains of a monument, in the shape of a pile of rocks with a hole through the middle, as if a stake or pillar had been removed, no traces of which could be found. About 50 feet from this was found a large rock with a cross (X)cut in its face, but no ins-:; rip t ions were on- it; a blazed tree on the River hank nsar by was also noticed- Mr. Poote had all the latest maps of this section with him, and from the information they gave every thing seemed to indicate chat we had found the line of the reserva- |
