I rejected his proposition, of course, but believe he was more likely to criminate some respectable and. honest person than, the lav/less vagabond who was the source of supply. I found the people anxious to stop the whisky traffic with these Indians, and accordingly informed them that they must secure the evidence- I left in the hands of Mayor Clark a form of complaint, and put the town authorities in communication with United States Attorney Hobson, and have reason to believe the people will soon clean out the whisky sellers in their country, now that they I: now 11ow to p ro c o ed. In conclusion, I beg most respectfully to impress upon the Government the condition of things at Meeker and throughout Garfield County. The people have petitioned their governor to ask the Government to remove this renegade band of Indians and ee i r stock from rmong them, that they may bo allowed to peaceably follow their avocations. They claim that it is violating no law to compel these Indians to live upon the lands allotted to them. I enclose herewith a copy of a newspaper published in Meeker, and have marked an article which too plainly indicates the necessi- |
