S . Ho .4-703 ) relative to reported violations of the Intercourse Acts, at and in the neighborhood of Meeker', Garfield County, Colorado, as follows; This part, of Colorado can only be reached, by stare coach, or private conveyance,- a ri.de of two days and nights. The town of Meeker is largely composed of buildings which were used three years since as officers' quarters and barracks. This military post was established soon after the massacre of United States Indian Agent Meeker and his assistants. Trie county of Garfield, was until three "ears ago, occupied by the Yfhitc Kiver Ute Indians as a reservation; by treaty these Indians were removed out of Colorado into Utah, and. then- reservation opened to settlement, and the troops wore withdrawn and large numbers of citizens became preceiptors of the land. The taxable property is now one and three-fourths million of dollars. |
