The Commissioner of Indian Affairs: Sir: I have yours of the 17th instant, concerning the Uintah Ute Indians now in Utah. The Uintah band of Utos participated in the making of the treaty of 18(38 by the confederated bands of Ufces with the government, as well as that of the treaty r • " known as the Brunot treaty of 1873. In the; distribution of the money provided for under the treaties of 1,868 and 1873, the Uintah band has been ignored, and the money has been paid to the other bands. The Uintahs did not participate in the agreement ratified by act of congress June 15, 188o, but are in my judgment entitled to their due proportion of that fund as well as the annual payment of twenty-five thousand dollars provided for by the treaty of 1873, which has been withheld from them. The census of the Uintah Utes, mentioned in your letter, is A 7-/k |
