They see the great benefit arising from cultivating the earth; raising Stock, and following in the train of civilization or civilized existence. They begin to realize their own naked and forlorn condition. They have very generally in this region of country endured instead of enjoyed a half starved precarious existence; subsisting principally upon roots, insects, and reptiles, not having to any extent for many years and I question (owing to the dry, barren, and rugged nature of the Country) if ever they possessed the advantages of hhe usual products of the chase. They cannot in truth say, that the settlements in this Territory have been of the least determined to them, but on the contrary a great benefit: this of course they do not appreciate when the least restraining influence is exercised; which does not accord with their liberal notions of rapine, and plunder. Hence, an occasional interruption of peaceful relations especially if they think that they can force a few presents in consideration of being turbulent.
