Show 178 leaves Minnie Maud Carfon at the Duchesne River, twenty seven miles, there is no water. Mail for the post and the Agencies is at present carried from Green River City Wyoming on the Union Pacific R.R. via Ashley a distance of about 175 miles. This road is over a high rough country by way of Diamond Mountain and crosses Green River at Jarves Ferry. Another road leading to Fort Duchesne (the one by which the troops marched in) is from Carter Station on the Union Pacific R.R. via Fort Bridger, its length is about 135 miles. This is an excellent road from the 1st of July to 1st of November, with great abundance of water wood & grass. The labor of several companies of troops in 1882 (under the direction of the Department Commander) placed this road in excellent condition for travel and freighting, it crosses the Uintah range of mountains at and elevation of nearly 10,000 feet and is therefore impracticable on account of the snow, except between the dates named. X X X X Sd. L. H. Stanton Paymaster U.S.A. 15 The above was obtained from the A.CO. Decern 30th 1886 As the result of the founding of Fort Duchesne, Fort Fred Steele was abandoned almost immediately. Fort Bridger soon after in 1890. The Utes remained resentful about the founding of the fort. 15 National Archives, Cartographic Division, Record Group 77, Utah F i l e .
