Central Classified Files CCF Uintah and Ouray, 120- 124 ( Three Boxes) This box contains one large file on the return of the Absentee Utes to Utah from South Dakota. There is no specific information in the file about places on the Reservation. The remaining files in the box have to do with permission either to trade on the reservation or to occupy buildings at the fort. Central Classified Files CCF Uintah and Ouray, 150- 155 ( Seven Boxes) Miscellaneous inspection reports. Some on lumbering, some on schools, many fiscal reports. There are reports on court proceedings, and horse herds, others on the abandoned fort. There are medical reports on individual Indians or health workers. Abandonment of houses and allotments. Category 1543 includes a complete list of all the leases made on allotments from 1921- 1928. Central Classified Files CCF Uintah and Ouray, 300- 309 ( Six Boxes) These boxes contain reports on and correspondence about water rights, grazing, care of timber on the reservation, and eradication of noxious weeds on the reservation. There is one entire box labeled " general grazing" that contains detailed discussions of the carrying capacity of various areas of the reservation. There is a second box on public domain grazing. The information in the grazing report is detailed in its discussion about the vegetation in various places on the reservation, but there is nothing about other matters of cultural relevance to the Indians. Category 304 deals with land purchases under the Indian Reorganization Act. I called for these documents thinking that there might be letters from Indians asking for the purchase of specific sites because they were culturally significant. But, there are not. Cajtegory 307 has files relating to opening reservation land to non- Indian grazing and settlement. There are many documents created by Indians opposing this. 19 |
