Dear Sir: Relative to the case of Sverett Eatch, a r i u te Indian indicted in Colorado, and now a fugitive in Utah, efforts by the United States Marshal, Uebeker, of Utah, to melee a r r e s t having thus far been unsuccessful, and a cond i t i o n approaching an Indian uprising having occurred,, it has been determined that General Hugh Scott, U. S. A., should be sent to the scene of the disturbance with ample authority to confer ith the Indians and deal with the s i t u a t i o n . Shis action is ta^ en ~ oy the Secretary of War. Telegram has today been sent to United States Ilarshal, ITebeker, at Bluff, to the above . effect. General Scott will make every effort to secure the peaceable surrender of Hatch and such other Indians as may have violated the law. .-_ s he must be in a position to give absolute assurance to Eatch and. other Indians that they will be protected from any violence from any source and given a fair t r i a l , and not surrendered to a posse, or to any Marshal or |
