While land had been originally set aside for the reservation, i t was not left as reservation land after the period of allotments* Prior to the introckctlon of the Ut © Jurisdictional Bill, a b i l l , numbered 915&, was introduced in the House to give the Uncompahgre Utes land for a reservation. Unfortunately, the Mil failed to get out of the House's Committee of Indian Affairs, When i t became obvious that th © b i l l was not going to be passed, it was incorporated into a Jurisdictional Bill, In this form the Bill was reported out of the House11 s Committee of Indian Affairs and passed the House* s vote of approval in th ® 7^ th Congress, first session; thus, the House had given i t s approval for th © Utes to sue the government* Unfortunately, th ® same jurisdictional act was not seen with th ® same light as that of the House, and i t failed to pass that session of the 74th Congress, Because I t was felt there was s t i l l a possibility that there might be legislative action on the b i l l to add 726,000 acres to the Uintah Reservation for the Uncompahgre © , i t was introduced in the Rouse again* 5 It failed, and continued to fail, until i t s passage and approval on March 11, 1943, as an, act to add 427* 015 acres of land to the Uintah and Ouray Reservation for the Uncompahgre Utes, Although i t was only a small part of the desired amount of acreage and even a smaller amount compared to the amount of land given by the Uncompahgre © to th ® government In the 1880 agreement, It was an attempt by th © government to correct an injustice of th © past* During the same Congress ( 74th) the b i l l asking for payment on land taken from the reservation by the Executive Order of August 14, |
