Show THE UTi LAID SEfTLffilOT AUD GOMSEQUSfTIAL UTE TEH YEAR DWELOfMltfTAL PROGRAM Following an Indian uprising in 18? 9* th ® Unoompahgr ® and Whit ® River band ® of th © Ut © Indian © were forced to giv ® up th © ir land in Colorado and move, at m ® point* to a r © servation in Eastern, Utah near another band of Utes, the Uintah © * An agreement had been made with th © Utes by th ® federal Government for th ® establishment of a r@ ® ® rvation which would provide th ® Uneompahgre © with land for th © pursuit of agricultural activities* In return th © Indian ® were to receive com* peneatlon for the area of Colorado that they had left* However, in* vestlgatlon ® hy interested private eltlsens in the ® arly 1930' s clearly indicated the felted States Government had not fulfilled all aspect © of i t s 1880 agreement* Consequently, litigation was initiated in behalf of th © " Confederated Band ® of the Ute Tribe" to receive due monetary compensation, as well as more reservation land for th © settlement of these 1880 agreement ® * Th © purpose of this report i s twofold* Th © f i r s t part i s to describe th ® litigation that took place for the settlement of th ® land claims of th ® Ute ® , and the second part describe © to what use the money received by the Ut ® people ha © been put. For m Indian tribe to sue th © United States Government i t was necessary, prior to th ® establishment of the Indian Claims Commission, to first receive th ® permission of th © Legislative branch and the Executive branch of the government and then to submit a petition of |
