Show Appendix A Chronology 145 1946 The Indian Claims Commission is formed to handle Indian claims against the government. 1947 A list of Indian groups ready for self-dependence and termination of federal aid does not include any Nuwuvi. 1951 The Nuwuvi file a claim suit with the Indian Claims Commission. 1953 Senator Watkins meets with Nuwuvi and Pahvant tribal representatives at Richfield, Utah, to discuss termination. 1954 A second list of Indians ready for termination judges the Nuwuvi as unready. 1954 Congress holds hearings on termination. 1954 President Eisenhower signs bill terminating the Utah Nuwuvi's special trust relationship with the federal government. Included are the Shivwits, Indian Peaks, Kanosh, and Koosharem bands of Nuwuvi and Utes. Cedar City band is overlooked. 1957 Final termination date. Tribal lands are placed under the control of Walker Bank in Salt Lake City through a trusteeship. The Indians retained subsurface rights for ten years. Federal indebtedness is cancelled, but tribal lands are subject to taxation. 1950's(late) Most of the Indian Peak band moves to the Cedar City colony. Most of the Shivwits band moves into local towns. 1965 Indian Claims Commission makes judgment in favor of the Nuwuvi, awarding $8,250,000, for 29,935,000 acres. 1965 Las Vegas band draws up a proposed government with a constitution and by-laws. 1968 Congress authorizes payment of Indian Claims Com- mission judgment to the Nuwuvi. |
