Title Gentile Account, Editor's Notes xiii
Description EbjtWs Note Before this journal of Elizabeth Kane could be published, Norman R. Bowen died suddenly August 26, 1992, while visit- ing his brother-in-law in Alaska. Since that time, additional work has been done on the journal to prepare it for publica- tion. Maureen Ursenbach Beecher, General Editor of the series of Women's Diaries and Autobiographies published by the University of Utah Press, was instrumental in arranging for Laga Van Beek, a graduate student in history at Brigham Young University, to check the transcribed journal against Elizabeth Kane's original. The Tanner Trust Fund appreciates the generos- ity of the Women's Research Institute of Brigham Young University for funding her work. This journal of Elizabeth Kane's visit to St. George, includ- ing spelling and punctuation, has been reproduced as closely as possible to the original. The journal may have been compiled from notes and letters she wrote while in Utah. Several things suggest this possibility. The dates, in some cases, do not coin- cide with what is known of the Kanes' travels, some entries appear to be letters, and the verb tense used in some of the entries indicate it may have been written after the occurrence. x111
