October l .-I rose this morning long before daylight, and heard with a feeling of plea urc the tinkling of cow-hells at the sculemenl on the opposite side of the .Mi~souri. .Early in the day we reached Mr. atpy' ~ residence; and, in the security and comfort of his hoRpitable mansion, felt the pleasure of being again within the pale of civilization. 'V e found our boat on the stocks; a few days sufTiccd to complete her; ane:l, in the afternoon o[ the 4th, we embarked on the 1\'lis ... ouri. All our cquipacre, horses, carts, and the 'materiel of the camp, hnd been sold at public auction at llellevue. 'rhe strength of my party enabled me to man the boat with ten oars, relieved \·ery hour; and we descended rapidly. Early on the mornirw of the lOth , we halted to make some astronomical observations at the month of the Kanzas, exactly four months since we had left the trading-post of Mr. Cyprian Chouteau, on the same river, ten miles above. On our de cent to this place, we had employ d ourselves in survr.yincr and sketchiwr the Missouri, makin(J' astronomical ~bservat ions regu1nrly at night and at ~1idclay, whenever th~ weather pcrmlttcd. These operations on the river were continued until our ~rrival. at the city of St. Louis, :Missouri, on the 17th; and will be found, 1mbodu~~l wtth other results, on the map and in the appendices which accompany thrs report. At St. Louis, the sale of our remaining effects was made; . and, leaving: that city by steamboat on the 18th, I had the honor to report to you at the c1ty of "\Vashington on the 29th of October.
