Show COMBUSTION CHAMBER The rig was designed with a combustion chamber having water cooled walls and capable of tolerating a flame of at least 25' (7.63m) in length. As can be seen from Figure 23, the chamber is an 8' (2.44m) diameter cylinder lying concentrically in a 12* x 12' x 36' (3.66m x 3.66m x 10.98m) water tank. The 1/4" (6mm) thick low carbon steel chamber is 28' (8.54m) long from the burner position in the front thrust wall to the centerline of the 8' (2.44m) diameter stack and is arranged horizontally. The stack contracts to 4' (1.22m) diameter, some 20* (6.1m) above ground level, so as to increase the flue gas velocity. Above the water level, which is kept some 12" (300mm) below the top of the tank, the stack is lined with plates of 1/16" (1.6mm) thick stainless steel, forming a radiation flange and providing an unjacketed section for corrosion and deposition probes. The top 7'-2" (2.19m) is unlined and considered expendable. For observation and measurement of the flame, the chamber contains a number of 4" (91.5mm) diameter ports on each side on the horizontal axis. These ports are so shaped in order to permit probes to be angled from the horizontal when necessary.
