Show -2of Mormon Converts in Britain, 1837-52,11 draws from personal diaries and autobiographies to explain the puzzling assertion that Mormonism was attracting working class converts but was gathering them from midd1e class churches. Brigham Young did not write his autobiography but did talk about himself in public addresses published during his lifetime. Ronald W. Walker and Ronald K. Esplin have collected these revealing insights into a delightful collection called "Brigham Himself: An Autobiographical A contrasting study in biography is Larry E. Hunt's insightful overview of Recollection." Hunt's article discovers "Frederick Madison Smith: The Formative Years of an RLDS President." in the social philosophy of this grandson of Joseph Smith the intermingled influence of Mormon ism's vision of a literal Zion and the conservative social gospel ideas of "mugwump" reformers. Another study in twentieth-century history is IIMormon Influence on the Unionization of Eastern Utah Coal Miners, 1903-33." Kent Powell of the Utah State Historical Society explains changing attitudes toward unions in his succinct summary of labor-management relations in Mormon Utah.
