Show ARC0963/SAMP_RES.RPT.2 07 /31/96 2.0 SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS OBJECTIVES AND PROCEDURES 2.1 OBJECTIVES The Bingham Creek Channel Phase III removal action included collecting soil and/ or tailings samples from various properties where removal and/or sampling is to occur. The objectives of the soil/tailings sampling and analysis effort is to delineate the horizontal and vertical extent of the areas requiring tailings removal in accordance with requirements set forth in the UAO. The criteria used for soils/tailings removal specifies materials with concentrations exceeding 1,100 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) lead and 100 mg/kg arsenic. Initial samples were used to analyze and compare the XRF results with the analytical lab results. These results are provided in Appendix B. Pre-removal soil/tailings sampling was then performed in specified residential areas to delineate areas of removal at the surface and at' depth. Replacement soil sampling, removal sampling, and post-removal soil/tailings sampling (confirmatory sampling) are currently being performed. These results will be presented in the removal action closure report. 2.2 PROCEDURES 2.2.1 SAMPLING STRATEGY Sampling efforts for the Removal Action (RA) were focused in the area with the greatest potential for exposure to human populations. Sampling was performed considering properties with sandboxes and play areas present, and where high blood lead levels were observed. Sampling began on August 28, 1995 in the Fahnian Ranchettes neighborhood. Each property included in this removal action/investigation was addressed in zones. ESE used the same zones previously defined by EPA on properties where sampling has occurred and removal is required. ESE also established similar zones on new properties. The character of these zones includes the following: • • • • • • • • Pastures Fields Front yards Back yards Side yards Gardens Flower beds Sandboxes and/ or play areas Zones established by ESE are no larger than 10,000 square feet (i.e., 100 feet by 100 feet) in pastures and fields. On residential properties, zones are designated in the front yard, back yard, side yard, gardens, flower beds, and sandboxes and/ or play areas. Each zone was further divided into grid units with at least 40 units per grid. 2 |
