Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada How does one go from having no career goal at all when graduating from college with a degree in English to applying to residency in General Surgery 12 years later? I'm not entirely sure, but here I am. The journey has been difficult, and there's no real sign of it getting any easier. But I wouldn't change my decision for anything. "Oh, you're Alaska's husband!" "Yes, and Xavier and Orion's dad, too!" , t- Jr . .¼;;·,/ --k'* ~f,_,, ,<f~ Actually becoming a doctor has required 1nuch more than just showing up to school. Surprise! In fact, this transformation has been one of the most difficult things I have ever done. Thanks go to my beautiful wife, Alaska, for her love, support, input, encouragement, and her faith in me. Thank you, Dear. To Alaska, our children, and the rest of my family, I love you so much. Thanks also especially to classmates with whom I worked during third year. Honestly, without your friendship, I could not have done it: J.R. McCandless, Suelin Hilbert, Jasmin Jensen (we were definitely the OB/Gyn "dream team" ha ha); Liz Johnson (you helped put me back together after my daily Cardiology shredding); Cynthia Lodding and Rachel Fisher (Medicine wasn't too bad, thanks to you); Cynthia Lawlor (you kept me sane during Psychiatry - literally). Thanks to those Surgery faculty and residents who cared enough to really teach and mentor me: Dr. Meyers, Dr. Downey, Dr. E. Scaife, Dr. C. Scaife, Dr. Mulvihill, and residents Drs. Fenton, Stroup, Le, Larsen. Thank you Dr. Haas for helping me prepare to succeed in Surgery. Finally, thank you, Lord, for making it all possible. 102 Things I read/did/thought about during lecture and while holding retractors (clockwise): trips to Argentina (thanks, Cynthia), Peanuts, crosswords, comics, God. |
