I used to put small mounds of powder at intervals on the tracks of the street cars which ran in front of our house. As the cars would pass by, it would sound like the + taccato rattle of a machine gun. Grandpa used to perform in the black arts, and sleight of hand. He would »ut on magic shows at the Utah State Industrial School, th: boy’s reformatory at the north end of Ogden. On one occasion, my father was helping him with one of the illusions, Grandpa audience. Then, “Dr. Mysto" selected cards, tear them into a few of selected, the but (grandpa Farr) small pieces, and stuff them into the oversize barrel of a trick pistol. He then would hand the pistol to my father, who would go to the other side of the stage, while grandpa suspended a black cloth from the fingers of his two extended hands. Grandpa would shake the cloth like you would shake out a rug just as father fired the pistol at the cloth. To the amazement of the audience, the selected cards would appear on the cloth, whole and restored. [It always was a source of bewilderment. But on this one occasion, after firing the pistol, my father lowered barrel of the firearm and the torn bits of cards cascaded out of the muzzle. The audience enjoyed that also. I inheriteda couple of his “magic wands", the card Pistol, a few items of magic paraphernalia, some of hig scenic oil paintings, and an old wooden fife, exactly like I have seen in Revolutionary War exhibits. I treasure these items very much, and someday will pass them on to my posterity as part of a great heritage. I just wish Grandma had not disposed of his collection of Indian artifacts, as there were many items of great interest. He served an LDS mission to the Sandwich Islands, Hawaii, as did his father, one of his sons, and one of hig grandsons. I have visited one of the coastal areas on Oahu, where he served, and remember a small green Christian church, Which, in accord with the dates displayed, would have been there when he was there. According to the inscriptions, the little church was once near the beach, but in a violent storm it was blown inland across the roadway, and is now relocated farther from the beach.
