TEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE . On F.igh Up the surroundiItg' mountains there are plainly marked terraces that stand out ~ft~ as the light streaks against the blue backgrounq of the mountains. These were the shorelines of ancient Lake Bonneville y which . was a;ooo feet deep in places. Over the centuries the climate underwent a change from ~et to dry; the area covered by water shrank and the lake became increasingly salty. Great salt Lake is the present-day remnant of old Lake Bonneville. The flatland enclosed within 'the rim of the mountains · is the former floor .o f the .lake Bonneville.. This is tha. site of the Bear River. Refuge. l·!uch of the early market hunting took place on the Bear River Delta.. The great flocks of waterfowl be~ t~ dwindle. The refuge is the site of most of th~ hunting grounds of early (Fremont Culture) I!l.dian inha1Jitants ·of this area. Scattered ar't ifacts have been' found on the refuge and vicinity~ consisting of arrowheads, manos~ knives, awls, pottery, etc. The Bear River Refuge is also widely known as an arena of research, especially on avian botulism. It was in the period 1909 - 1913 that major attention was first drawn to botulism and in 1910 nearly half' a. million ducks died around the Bear River Delta and Willard Spur area; During the 1940's a sustained program of research on avian botuliSm was started at the Bear River Refuge.
