However, l a t e r al e f f e c t s from i n h o m o g e n e i t i e s (Van N o s t r a n d and C o o k , 1966) a r e a p p a r e n t on t h e s o u n d i n g c u r v e s and t h e d a t a c o u l d n ot b e m o d e l e d as a c c u r a t e l y as t h e S c h l u m b e r g e r s e d i m e nt s o u n d i n g s . I n v e r s e m o d e l i n g (Inman, 1973) was u s e d to o b t a i n t h e b e s t l e a s t s q u a r e s c u r v e f i t s t o t h e d a t a. The FBSW 2 a (E-W) s o u n d i n g, h o w e v e r , i n d i c a t e s e n t i r e l y d i f f e r e n t r e s u l t s , a l t h o u g h it was c e n t e r e d o n l y a few h u n d r e d m e t e r s f r om t h e o t h er s o u n d i n g s . A 4 - l a y e r e d m o d e l , c o n s i s t i n g of a b o u t 14 m e t e r s of o v e r b u r d e n c o v e r i n g 61 m e t e r s of b a s a l t , p r o v i d ed t h e b e s t i n v e r s e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of t h e d a t a . F u r t h e r m o r e, 54 t h e l a y e r r e s i s t i v i t i e s of t h e FBSW 2 a (E-W) s o u n d i ng mode 1 a r e much g r e a t e r t h a n t h e l a y e r r e s i s t i v i t i e s of t h e o t h e r s o u n d i n g s i n t h e F u m a r o l e B u t t e S o u t h w e s t a r e a. W h e r e a s t h e o t h e r s o u n d i n g s i n d i c a t e d o v e r b u r d e n r e s i s t i v i t i e s of 1-2 o h m - m e t e r s and b a s a l t r e s i s t i v i t i e s of a r o u n d 2 , 0 0 0 o h m - m e t e r s , FBSW 2 a (E-W) i n d i c a t e d an o v e r b u r d e n r e s i s t i v i t y in e x c e s s of 100 o h m - m e t e r s and a b a s a l t r e s i s t i v i t y of a b o u t 5 , 0 0 0 o h m - m e t e r s . The r e s i s t i v i t y of t h e s e m i - i n f i n i t e h a l f - s p a c e u n d e r l y i n g t he b a s a l t was i n t e r p r e t e d t o be a b o u t 100 o h m - m e t e r s from t he FBSW 2 a (E-W) d a t a , w h e r e a s i t was 25 o h m - m e t e r s o r l e ss f o r t h e o t h e r s o u n d i n g s. T h e s e v a r i a t i o n s b e t w e e n s o u n d i n g m o d e l s may be a t t r i b u t e d t o m a c r o a n i s o t r o p y of t h e s e d i m e n t s and b a s a l t , t o l a t e r a l i n h o m o g e n e i t i e s , and t o v a r y i n g t h i c k n e s s of c o n d u c t i v e o v e r b u r d e n . The s e d i m e n t o v e r b u r d e n " t r a p s" t h e c u r r e n t b e c a u s e i t i s more c o n d u c t i v e t h a n t h e u n d e r l y i n g b a s a l t . The c u r r e n t e l e c t r o d e s must be e x p a n d ed much f u r t h e r f o r t h e c u r r e n t t o p e n e t r a t e t h e c o n d u c t i ve o v e r b u r d e n t h a n l i n e a r r e s i s t i v i t y t h e o r y w o u l d i n d i c a te ( a s s u m i n g a c o n s t a n t r a t i o b e t w e e n e l e c t r o d e s e p a r a t i on a n d t h e e f f e c t i v e d e p t h of i n v e s t i g a t i o n f o r a g i v e n e l e c t r o d e c o n f i g u r a t i o n (Roy and A p p a r a o , 19 7 1 ; F r o h l i c h , 19 7 4 ) ) . T h i s r e s u l t s in o v e r b u r d e n t h i c k n e s s b e i n g o v e r e s t i m a t e d. 55 A l s o , t h e r e i s an i n v e r s e r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n r e s i s t i v i t y and b e d t h i c k n e s s t h a t can r e s u l t i n a r a n g e of s o l u t i o n s for a g i v e n s e t of f i e l d d a t a . The r a n g e of s o l u t i o n s w i ll d e p e n d l a r g e l y on t h e a c c u r a c y of t h e d a t a. The d i p o l e - d i p o l e r e s i s t i v i t y p r o f i l e s s u g g e s t t h at t h e b a s a l t i s t h i c k e r b e n e a t h t h e s o u t h w e s t s o u n d i n g s t h an t h o s e n o r t h e a s t of F u m a r o l e B u t t e . In p a r t , t h i s can be e x p l a i n e d by a 40 m e t e r e l e v a t i o n d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n t he t w o s o u n d i n g a r e a s ( A s s u m i n g a r e l a t i v e l y f l a t b a s . a l t - s e di m e n t c o n t a c t , t h e b a s a l t w o u l d b e a b o u t 40 m e t e r s t h i n n er i n t h e n o r t h e a s t a r e a ) . T h e r e i s a l s o a d e f i n i t e d e c r e a se i n t h e a p p a r e n t r e s i s t i v i t y of t h e b a s a l t u n d e r t h e n o r t h e a s t s o u n d i n g as d e t e r m i n e d by m o d e l i n g t h e S c h l u m b e r g er s o u n d i n g d a t a . This may b e a t t r i b u t a b l e t o an i n c r e a s e in w a t e r or c l a y c o n t e n t , t o r e c i p r o c i t y b e t w e e n r e s i s t i v i ty a n d b e d t h i c k n e s s , a n d / o r t o a l e s s e r r e s o l u t i o n of i n t e r m e d i a t e b e d s as i n t h e c a s e of a r e s i s t i v e bed b e t w e e n two c o n d u c t i v e l a y e r s . Zohdy (1968) r e p o r t s t h a t t h e s h a p e of a 5 - l a y e r r e s i s t i v i t y c u r v e r e m a i n e d u n c h a n g e d when t he m i d d l e l a y e r r e s i s t i v i t y d e c r e a s e d by a f a c t o r of 1 3 8 0, when t h e a d j a c e n t l a y e r r e s i s t i v i t i e s w e r e i n c r e a s e d by f a c t o r s of l e s s t h a n two t o c o m p e n s a t e t h e l a r g e r e s i s t i v i t y d e c r e a s e . I n h o m o g e n e i t i e s s u c h as c o n d u c t i v e c l ay i n l i e r s , p o s s i b l e f a u l t s , and l a v a f l o w c o n t a c t s may a l so 56 a c c o u n t f o r t h e s u b s t a n t i a l d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n t h e S c h l u m b e r g e r m o d e l s of t h e b a s a l t. T h e F u m a r o l e B u t t e s o u t h w e s t s o u n d i n g s , h o w e v e r , are c o n s i s t e n t e n o u g h t o w a r r a n t t h a t an o v e r a l l model f o r t he b a s a l t be p r o p o s e d as f o l l o w s: The t h i c k n e s s of t h e b a s a l t in t h e v i c i n i t y of t he s o u t h w e s t s o u n d i n g s i s 75 t o 90 m e t e r s . The r e s i s t i v i ty o f t h e b a s a l t i s a r o u n d 2000 o h m - m e t e r s ( a l t h o u g h r e s i s t i v i t i e s as h i g h as 5000 o h m - m e t e r s a r e s u g g e s t e d by one s o u n d i n g ) . Assuming a r e l a t i v e l y h o r i z o n t a l b a s a l c o n t a c t, t h e b a s a l t can be e x p e c t e d t o b e a r o u n d 45 m e t e r s t h i c k in t h e v i c i n i t y of t h e n o r t h e a s t s o u n d i n g s (due t o e l e v a t i on c h a n g e ) . The l o w e r r e s i s t i v i t y of t h e b a s a l t i n t h e n o r t h e a s t a r e a may be a t t r i b u t e d t o m a s k i n g e f f e c t s of c o n d u c t i v e o v e r b u r d e n , a d d i t i o n a l w a t e r c o n t e n t , and ( p o s s i b l y) a d d i t i o n a l c l a y c o n t e n t of t h e b a s a l t. V CONCLUSIONS The d i p o l e - d i p o l e r e s i s t i v i t y - I P d a t a f r om L i n e 1 a n d L i n e 2 on F u m a r o l e B u t t e i n d i c a t e a r e l a t i v e l y h o r i z o n t a l l y l a y e r e d s u b s u r f a c e . R e s i s t i v i t y d e c r e a s e s and i n d u c e d p o l a r i z a t i o n i n c r e a s e s w i t h d e p t h . These e f f e c ts a r e a t t r i b u t e d t o an i n c r e a s e i n g r o u n d w a t e r , and s a lt a n d c l a y , as t h e e f f e c t i v e p e n e t r a t i o n of t h e e x p a n d i ng r e s i s t i v i t y a r r a y a p p r o a c h e s a t h i c k s e d i m e n t a r y s e q u e n ce b e n e a t h F u m a r o l e B u t t e . The b a s a l t - s e d i m e n t c o n t a c t is r e l a t i v e l y h o r i z o n t a l and t h e v a r i a t i o n s of t h i c k n e s s of t h e b a s a l t , i n d i c a t e d by t h e d i p o l e - d i p o l e p s u e d o - s e c t i o n s, a r e b e l i e v e d t o be c a u s e d by e l e v a t i o n c h a n g e s a l o n g t he d i p o l e - d i p o l e l i n e s. S c h l u m b e r g e r s o u n d i n g s on F u m a r o l e B u t t e s u b s t a n t i a te t h e d i p o l e - d i p o l e d a t a a n d i n d i c a t e a b a s a l t t h i c k n e s s of 75 t o 9 0 m e t e r s i n t h e v i c i n i t y of t h e F u m a r o l e B u t te S o u t h w e s t s o u n d i n g s . The b a s a l t t h i c k n e s s i n t h e v i c i n i ty o f t h e n o r t h e a s t s o u n d i n g s i s a b o u t 4 5 m e t e r s due t o t he d i f f e r e n c e i n e l e v a t i o n b e t w e e n t h e two a r e a s . A few a n o m a l o u s l y h i g h and l o w r e s i s t i v i t y v a l u e s , r e c o r d ed a l o n g t h e d i p o l e - d i p o l e l i n e s in t h e v i c i n i t y of t h e v o l c a n i c n e c k , may i n d i c a t e a l o c a l i z e d f r a c t u r e zone t h r o u gh w h i c h t h e b a s a l t was e x t r u d e d a n d , p o s s i b l y , t h r o u g h w h i ch h o t w a t e r i s now r i s i n g , b u t n o t h i n g c o n c l u s i v e can be s t a t e d f o r t h e s e few v a l u e s. F u m a r o l e B u t t e p r o b a b l y d o e s n o t c o n t r i b u t e t h e r m a l ly t o A b r a h am Hot S p r i n g s . However, t h e b a s a l t f l o w may c o n c e a l a f r a c t u r e zone t h r o u g h w h i c h t h e r m a l v a p o r s o r h ot w a t e r i s r i s i n g .
