Description The Utah Ski and Snowboard Archives is one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire country for research into the history and development of Utah's prospering winter sports industry. The archives document the history of ski competition on local, national, and international levels; the founding of major resorts; snow safety and avalanche control; ski equipment; ski instruction; freestyle skiing; the 10th Mountain Division; back-country skiing; and virtually every facet of winter sports in Utah and the surrounding region. The archives are the repository for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics Games Bid Committee records and the records of the 2002 games themselves.

Willard Marriott Library Editor: Mike Korologos 2008 SKI AFFAIR University of Utah Ski Team: 60 Years, 11 National Titles During their 60 years of existence University of Utah ski teams have become synonymous with history-making. That is borne out at trophy cases, halls-of-fame, national championships, student-athlete honor rolls, All American lists and on U.S. Olympic teams. The team will add another accolade to its impressive list of accomplishments Thursday, October 16, at the 2008 Ski Affair when it receives the prestigious History-Maker Award from the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library's Ski Archives, whose mission is to preserve the history of winter sports in the Intermountain West. Held at the Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City and open to the public, the festive Ski Affair will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, followed by Ron Steele Collection dinner, awards ceremonies and video presentations showcasing the History-Makers. Also honored at the event will be the 2008 recipient of the S,J. Quinney Award Karen Korfanta for her achievements and contributions to skiing. The history-laden march to glory started with the 1947-1948 team, which ~on the National Intercollegiate Championship riding the ski prowess~of Jack Reddish, Dick Movitz, Dev Jennings and Ann Winn, who WG:re named to the 1948 U.S. Olympic Team. Coached by Friedl Lang, o'thers on that first U of U team were Dick Kirby, Steve Nebeker and Bill Beesley. The first Uof U women's ski team was organized a year later and it, too, was coached by Lang while Nanette Taylor served as assistant ~coach. Its members were Lora Craddock, Marie Church, Sheila Wherritt, Betsy Sugden, Janet Walker, Dorothy Paulson, June Rasmussen and Amy Toda. (In 1969, after 18 years under the U's Physical Education Department, the women's ski team became independent and women's skiing became recognized as an inter-collegiate sport. In 1983, the women's teaIl} was combined with the men's team and enjoyed its first NCAA championship). Subsequent teams kept the winning tradition alive, some seasons more than others.
