Creator Friends of the Utah Ski Archives
Subject Skis and Skiing--Periodicals; Skiing--Utah--History
Description The Utah Ski and Snowboard Archives is one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire country for research into the history and development of Utah's prospering winter sports industry. The archives document the history of ski competition on local, national, and international levels; the founding of major resorts; snow safety and avalanche control; ski equipment; ski instruction; freestyle skiing; the 10th Mountain Division; back-country skiing; and virtually every facet of winter sports in Utah and the surrounding region. The archives are the repository for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics Games Bid Committee records and the records of the 2002 games themselves.

Description Donations Report-Continued During last year's wildly successful Home Movie Day, we received many donations of 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm home movies, such as those from Jerry and Barbara Simon, that contain footage of Utahns skiing in many different areas. Leland and Thayre Dennis donated a scrapbook documenting the history of the Cottonwood Country Club Ski Program that began in 1964 at Alta. The long-running program moved to Snowbird in 2000 to add snowboarding lessons. Dorothy Perkins Shafer (1917-2004) and James Shafer (1915-2005), ski enthusiasts extraordinaire, were honored at a farewell party at Alta's Peruvian Lodge in June. The generosity of their friends and the friends of her daughter, Sue Rowland, and son, Jim Shafer, created a wonderful memorial donation to the Ski Archives of over $2,300. Sue and Jim plan to donate their parents collection to the archives in the future. Finally, many more images of Utah skiing and skiers were added on our website. The number of ski images is literally off the chart (the count only goes to 10,000) and combined with over 2,600 snowboarding images, gives the Ski Archives photo collection one of the Greatest Archives on Earth! Thanks again to the dedicated members of the Utah Ski Archives Board for all your hard work and support and to those in the ski community who have so generously donated their ski photos and memorabilia to the Archives. See you at the Ski Affair! 2005 Ski Affair Thursday, October 27,2005 6:00 p.m. $70/per person Make your reservations today! Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah celebrated its 14th annual Ski Affair at Little America Hotel on October 21, 2004. Jim Sullivan, of Snow King Resort in Jackson, Wyoming, who rarely misses a board meeting, received the Sue Raemer award in recognition of his long-standing and tireless support of the Ski Archives. More than 600 guests attended the silent auction and dinner. Spirited bidding on auction items and the generosity of our corporate sponsors resulted in a gross of over $85,000. Archivist Roy Webb's "Can you identify these skiers/photos" table helped put names to a number of anonymous ski faces and places. Marriott Library Update In March 2005, the Utah Legislature approved funds for the seismic upgrade of the Marriott Library. Work began in June and will continue for three years. In September 2005, we were pleased to welcome the new Marriott Library director, Joyce Ogburn, who comes to the Library from the University of Washington. Page 7
