Description BILL SPENCER NAMED TO HALLOF FAME The essence of ski history has taken on a new meaning for Sandy, Utah, resident Bill Spencer. That's because on Feb. 6,2000, his brush with history went from being a member of the volunteer Ski Archives Advisory Board to also being enshrined as one who helped develop the ski-and-shoot sport of biathlon to its world-class status it enjoys today. The U.S. Biathlon Association named the former University of Utah skier one of the first eight inductees into its Hall of Fame. He was a forerunner for the fledging sport at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games at Squaw Valley, CA, the first time it was an Olympic event. Since then he has been a competitor, U.S. Team leader, rifle coach or offtcial in all 10 Olympic Winter Games that followed. "The U.S. Biathlon Association is maturing. It was time to recog- nize people who had put so much into biathlon in this country," said Col. Alan Nye, the biathlon federation's vice president who headed the Hall of Fame committee. Biathlon expert Bdl Spencer m 1963 Utah Ski Archives J. Willard Marriott Library Salt Lake City, UT 84112-1179 wwwskiarchivesorg phone: (801) 581-3421 SKIARCHIVES QUICKTURNS The Cultural Olympiad Heritage Invitational Grant Program of the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 has awarded the J. Willard Marriott Library Ski Archives a $3,000 matching grant. Funds will be used to enhance an exhibit of historical skiing photos. The traveling photo exhibit has whet the historical interest of several entities whose marketing, photo and early-day files would become important additions to the Ski Archives, including Brighton Ski Area. Ski racer-instructor-ski school director-turned historian Alan Engen has embarked on his second book pertaining to the history of skiing in the region. Due out next fall, the book will feature photos from his vast collection of ski memorabilia that he has donated to the Marriott Library and to the Alf Engen Ski Museum under construction at the Utah Olympic Park. The collection promises to be the most extensive in the Ski Archives. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation. Ski Archives advisory board member Lester Keller is chairing a committee to establish criteria for the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame that will be housed in the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center/Alf Engen Ski Museum. First inductees will be announced when the $10 million facility opens to the public in the fall of 2002. The Ski Archives boasts some 200 collections, 300 oral histories and 9,000 images (photos/illustrations) of which 1,500 have been scanned for electronic transmission. Web Site Links Archives to the Future There's nothing like an organization founded in the past to take ne. lives,om. ard member Chris Raemer and )OO. quantum leaps into the future - but that's exactly what the J. Willard Marriott Library Ski Archives has do The proof is in its web site www.skiarc_h Through the expertise of Ski Archive advisory bo his web wizard cohort, Brittany Brown, the site went on line in August 2( With a few keystrokes and a mouse click or two one can find information about previous Ski Affairs, honorees, corporate sponsors, winter resorts, historical col- lections, make financial donations or get information about donating items of historical value. And there are links to photo archives and a photo search site. In its infancy, the site is destined to grow and improve, even to the ooint of including video and audio links. Stay tuned. . . or cc nrnected. 1 Change of address: Amie Scoville Marriott Library Salt Lake City, UT 84 112
