PHOTOEXHIBITOFFERSSNAPSHOTOFSKI ISTORY There were enough ski enthusiasts at the venerable City-County Building in down- town Salt Lake City on Friday, Oct. 6 to form a 1.5minute lift line. And rightly so. The occasion was to "Celebrate the History of Skiing in Utah," a classy affair served up by Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson's office, the Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation and the J. Willard Marriott Library Ski Archives. Focus of the celebration was an exhibit of 150 mostly-black-and-white photographs dating to the turn of the 20th Century. It marked the first of many celebrations leading to the city hosting the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Many of the photos came from the Alan Engen collection that he has contributed to the Ski Archives and that ultimately will exhibited at the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center-Alf Engen Ski Museum that is under construction at the Utah Olympic Park. The gala unveiling of the month-long exhibit was orchestrated by Ski Archives vice chair Barbara Amidon and Dianne Hesleph, director of Olympic Opportunities Planning for Salt Lake City. A major element of the Ski Archives' Outreach Program, the exhibit will be on dis- play at several 2002 Olympic Winter Games test event site during the winter of 2000/200 1 and at selected competition venues during the Games ; Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Atzdcvson co-hosted photo exhibitfestivities.
