1999 Ski Affair-One for the Books

ARCHIVES OF OCT. 21,1999, WENT TRUE TO FORM: o Janet Quinney Lawson, recipient of the library's prestigious . award for her outstanding contributions to preserving ski history, was as eloquent and polished in her acceptance as she has been for decades as a "grande dame" of skiing in the west. o Junior Bounous, honored with the S.J. and J.E. Quinney Award for forging ski history in West, was as graceful and smooth in his message of thanks as he is while skiing in a cirque of waist-deep powder snow. o Jim Gaddis, winner of the Sue Raemer Memorial Award for unselfish and unending volun- teerism on behalf of the Ski Archives,was, as you might expect, very Gaddis-esque: "No, I'm not going to give a speech", he responded to chants of "speech" from the appreciative audience. The 550-plus diner-donors came, saw and reminisced like only skiers can do, causing one observer to exclaim: "Look at them., . they're having such a good time, they'd rather stay and talk than go in and eat." The silent auction established a new high-water mark, thanks to such diverse auction items as a one-of-a-kind metal wall sculpture of a ski scene, to commemorative baseball from the 1999 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Boston, to rare Salt Lake Olympic Games collector pins, to autographed footballs and bas- ketballs from the University of Utah teams. The always-professional presen- tation of rare, laugh-filled, nostal- gia-piquing video footage by Larry Warren highlighted the accomplishments of the major award recipients and left the cele- brants yearning for the opportuni- ty to makes those first tracks of the 1999-2000 ski season.
