Description Utah Ski Archives J. Willard Marriott Library University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah 84112-1179 TALES FROM THE ARCHIVES Powder Mountain was developed by Alvin Cobabe on land that was purchased by him and his father. They were partners in a cattle ranch in that area.. In 1958, the same year that Alvin Cobabe started medical school at the age of 41, he and some friends were riding in the area of Powder Mountain, when Byron Nesbitt a friend of his commented that the area possessed some great poten- tial for skiing. From that time on Dr. Cobabe said that he knew that the area had to become a ski resort, even though he knew nothing about skiing. Dr. Cobabe began investigating the idea whenever he could get away from work and medical school. He talked to other ski area operators. One of the first people he consulted was Chic Morton of Alta. He also contacted Nelson Bennett in Yakima, Washington, who was with Sun Valley for many years. Mr. Bennett came to Powder Mountain to advise Dr. Cobabe on building a ski area. Powder Mountain started operating in 1972 using Thiokol lifts. An engineer at Thiokol by the name of Bob Withrow had worked on the first lifts that were built at Sun valley and he was inter- ested in getting Thiokol involved in building lifts. The ski area opened its first Thiokol lift, the Sundown lift, on Washington's birthday in 1972. Dr. Cobabe operated a medical clinic at Powder Mountain for many years. At one point he was setting so many broken legs, that his medical insurance company said that if he continued to set so many broken legs, that he would have to pay orthopedic surgeon rates.
