Title 1997 Ski Affair: 'Biggest Yet'
Creator Friends of the Ski Archives
Description Spring 1998, No. 12 J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah Editor: Mike Korologos 1997 SKI AFFAIR: `BIGGEST YET' By Mike Korologos That skiers are a partying bunch is leg- endary. That legend was greatly enhanced at the 1997 "Ski Affair", a grand soiree for area skiers of the B.S. era . . . (that's Before Spandex). Nearly 600 skier-celebrants at the Little America Hotel ballroom last Oct. 23 made the fund-raiser the biggest yet. Under the auspices of the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library's Ski Archives Program, the festive affair raises funds for the library's Ski Archives, which seeks out, collects, catalogs and makes available to the public important and interesting materials pertaining to the history of skiing in the Intermountain West. Under the deft guidance of master of cer- emonies Larry Warren of KUTV Ch. 2, the buffet-style, nostalgia-accented, quick- paced, fun-filled evening included: o Wilby Durham, founder of the Deseret News Ski School, co-founder of Ski Utah, Inc., and long-time ski race official, received the prestigious S.J. and J.E. Quinney Award for his dedication to the advancement of skiing; o The Deseret News Ski School, which introduced skiing to many thousands in the Zane and Debbie Doyle enjoy the festivities at Ski Affair `97 contributions to skiing. area, was honored by the Ski Archives Program for its 50 years of continuous ser- vice to the expansion of the sport; o The U.S. Forest Service, Alta, Snowbasin, the Salt Lake City Parks and Recreation Department and the University of Utah were recognized for their early-on supporting roles of the Deseret News Ski School; o Carol Lupus, a volunteer since the start of the Ski Affair in 1989, received the Sue Raemer Award for voluntary service to the Ski Archives Program; o Some $30,000 was raised by the Affair for the Archives Program via a silent auc- tion, table sponsors and from diner-donors; o A 20minute video, made possible by the generosity of Alta Ski Lifts Co., and pro- duced by Alan Engen, director of the Alf Engen Ski School at Alta, served as a refreshing flashback to those B.S. days (see Spandex above); o Ski Archives chairman Dave Amidon recognized the efforts of numerous volun- teers who helped make the evening a suc- cess and the archives program popular, especially out-going board members Keith and Alice Lange, Bob Young and Jan Peterson. o Dr. Greg Thompson, an Archives Program co-founder (with the late Sue Raemer), who oversees the Library's Special Collections, acknowledged the Library's gratitude to the ski community for the contributions of the Ski Archives to the library; o Dr. Joe Arave, who is charged with gath- ering materials for the Ski Archives' collec- tions, updated the supporters on new mate- rials the library has amassed in recent months. And then talk began about meeting again - and reminiscing again - at the 1998 Ski Affair.
