Description The Utah Ski and Snowboard Archives is one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire country for research into the history and development of Utah's prospering winter sports industry. The archives document the history of ski competition on local, national, and international levels; the founding of major resorts; snow safety and avalanche control; ski equipment; ski instruction; freestyle skiing; the 10th Mountain Division; back-country skiing; and virtually every facet of winter sports in Utah and the surrounding region. The archives are the repository for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics Games Bid Committee records and the records of the 2002 games themselves.

The Utah Ski Archives' "Legends of Competition" awards program and buffet October 29, 1992, served as a harbinger for the region's 1992-93 ski season that arrived soon afterwards with prodigious amounts of snow. At the pre-season soiree the nostalgia, camaraderie, stories, and friendship renewals ran deep for the 400+ attendees in the biggest such affair yet staged by the University of Utah's Marriott Library Ski Archives Program. Receiving distinctive, personally inscribed certificates of achievement and recognition were Corey Engen, Sverre Engen, Suzy Harris Rytting, Dev Jennings, Dick Movitz, and the late Jack Reddish. Sverre Engen also was honored by the library with its Achieve- ments and Contributions Award for his many years of promoting the sport. This group dominated the ski racing scene in the 1940s and 1950s and forever carved their names in the annals of Utah skiing. The exploits of the group locally, regionally, nationally, and in world competition were relived in words, pictures, and movies to the delight of the throng of ski supporters. The awards and banquet are part of the library's efforts to highlight Utah's rich ski history and the individuals who helped shape what has become one of the state's most prized archives. Former NCAA national champion Jim Gaddis served as master of ceremonies and archives co-founder and volunteer chairperson, Sue Raemer, presented the certificates. The University of Utah's Director of Libraries Roger Hanson presented the special award to Sverre Engen. Previous honorees are Alf Engen, considered by many as the "father of powder ski- ing" and a pioneer in the development of the sport in the West; Earl Miller, former ski school director at Snowbasin; Junior Bounous, former ski school director at Snow- bird; Bill Lash, founder of the Professional Ski Instructors Association of America; and K. Smith, long-time ski school director and founder of Brighton. Master of ceremonies and one-time national collegiate ski champion Jim Gaddis, left, shares ski talk with Park City's Jan and Amanda Peterson at archives awards ceremony.
