Show THE BRUISE-1 THE BRUISE This morning I discovered a bruise that shocked me. Not like the usual pale lavender blots that are always sprouting on my shins and thighs and arms like shy spring flowers, but a passion flower, a great burst of bright purple, gaudy, bigger than the span of my hand, spread out across my pale Manhattan skin like a sudden birthmark. I often roam around the rooms of my apartment, careening off a wall or two, sliding to the floor sometimes. Door jambs are special friends of mine, and more than once I find the tablecloth crumpled on the floor because I must have clutched it on the way down. But purple this intense awes me. Peter walked into the room, frightening me at first, but I should have known someone was there by the way my clothes lay in little pools in a path to the bed. |
