Show 13U "There just i s n ' t room!" Tip seemed very happy when she came back. She had new jokes to t e l l us, and she had learned a new song which she sang night and day. I t could have been her mother' s song: After the ball is over, After the break of morn, After the dancers leaving, After the stars are gone; Many a heart is aching, If you could read them all; Many the hopes that have vanished After the ball. The sun disappeared for two months during December and January, but Christmas came. Early in December during a clear spell, Caribou and I went out looking for a Christmas tree. We found a stately blue spruce at the top of Gold Hill, which we cut down and slid over the crusted snow to our cabin. We could barely squeeze it through the door, and once inside it seemed to fill the entire cabin. We moved the table and the pansy hat and stood it in front of the window. Its lower branches reached out for six feet and its top touched the ridgepole. |
