Jabbo reaches with a huge paw and knocks the dice from Tang's hand. "Throw me down, Houseman!" Fewky throws him his half of the bet without a word. Jabbo looks around. "The slick a i n ' t been born yet; I knows craps like gravy knows r i c e . Now what I want to know i s , xvho don't like it?" His eyes meet Blue's. Blue is equal t o the challenge. "We rides together, but my mama bet not h i t me and I loves the ground she walks on," "I a i n ' t your mama," Blue gets t o his knees like a sprinter. "You putting me in the dozen, Jab?" Fewky hears a noise before the Titans clash. He scrambles to his feet and throws up a hand for silence. "Sssh, somebody eavedropping under the house." Jabbo, ready for Blue's lunge, dashes for the front door and around the s t o r e . Blue, bolting through the back door, grabs a clothesline from Fewky's porch. Jabbo and Blue meet, with Billy Nabb - Lattimore - pressed hard against a bricked support. Jabbo tosses Lattimore*s gun back under the store, muffles him with a bandana while Blue ropes him to the brick support. Silently they retrace t h e i r steps. " I t a i n ' t Billy Nabb; just some pothound scratching fleas," Jabbo says, motions Fewky to squat. "Come on, call the dice," Big Blue says. |
