Show page 44 "Gorgeous Queens from the S u l t a n s ' Harems!" shouted the shoxv7man. "Queens," snorted Granpa, a f t e r a c a r e f u l look. "You're too young and I'm too old, l e t ' s move along." Move along x^e d i d , on t h i s our adventurous t r i p t o the c a r n i v a l . But the g i r l s looked almost as I had alxvays pictured queens. I looked at Granpa; he had a l i v e l y gleam in his eyes. "Queens d o n ' t shake t h e i r hips in exactly t h a t manner. Take that redhead - " Granpa stopped t a l k i n g r i g h t there of course, but queens they were I know, for I see them y e t , see them dressed in p e a r l s and ivory buttons and r i c h s i l k s , see the dancing g i r l s , gorgeous queens from the s u l t a n s ' harems. Granpa and I moved along, through a sea of faces, past the F e r r i s xvheel and the merry-go-round. We stopped at a big machine t h a t made cotton candy. Granpa nodded and I plunked down my money, receiving a paper cone with enough candy on i t to hide behind. Oh, i t was a great occasion, t h i s v i s i t with my Granpa to the c a r n i v a l , t h i s many years ago. The candyman s a i d , " T h a t ' s . c a r n i v a l candy, son, a l l the sweetness of t h e world in i t ; , pink candy from a faraway land." From a faraway land! It t a s t e d t h a t way, the sweetest t a s te ever. It t i c k l e d my nose as I b i t into i t . Then i t floated around in my mouth and was gone, like magic. " P l a i n show candy," Granpa s a i d , as we walked past a House 0' Fun and a r a c e t r a c k with monkeys riding l i t t l e c a r t s . We were a b r e a s t of t h e game t e n t s , looking inside at the f i n e r y , when Granpa stopped and pointed. |
