Show Pat Nielson 1933,.., 2010 Ettalue Fernelius Nelson 1927,.., 2011 IN MEMORY OF ... ) • • After: a courageous and long battle, Lucy Patricia 'Pat' Murdock Nielson, mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 15, 2010, with her family by her side. Pat was born November 1, 1 933, in Heber City, Utah to Dorothy McAlister and Lovell Murdock. During childhood she had many adventures spendin~ time at Wolf Creek with her family herding sheep. She graduated from East High Schoql in 1952. In the midst of raising three chlldr.en she went on to obtain her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and her Master's degree in Educatlon. Pat was a teacher at West High School and then worked as an advocate for teachers for school districts in Salt Lake City, Great Falls, Montana, Tucson, Arizona and Ogden, Utah. Family was the top priority for Pat. It was very important to her to spend time with her family and to have family gatherings, . ensuring birthdays and other life events were celebrated with her wonderful home cooked meals! Pat was also very active and held leadership roles in organizations that supported furthering tlle rights of individuals, especial!)' women, including the League of Women Voters and AAUW. She was also actively involved as a volunteer and docent at Red Butte Garden and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Pat had a .great love for the outdoors, gardening, the arts, wild flowers, and bird watching and she shared her knowledge and love for these things and that love has been passed down to her children and their families. Pat loved traveling, especially with her sister Joanne, who shared many adventures near and far. Very special thanks from the family to the staff at the University of Utah hospital for their loving care and support, especially Dr. Amrapali Shah and Pat's nurse, Janeen. Pat is survived by her children Lucy Anderson Waite (Terry), Jim Nielson Ann Marie), and Elizabeth Nielson Ron Crouch) grandchildren, Carly, ~lake and ~annah, sister Dixie Whipple (Mark) and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, and her cat Sheba. She is also survived by her former husbands, Tom Anderson and Fred Nielson. Pat is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joanne Brown. A celebration of Pat's life will take place on Saturday, August 21 st at 1:00 p.m. at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1 626 South 1700 East, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Pat Nielson memorial fund at Red Butte Garden. Per Pat's wishes, she will be cremc;ited and her ashes will be scattered at the places she loved most, amongst the wildflowers and in the desert. Online condolences can be made at www.larkinmortuary.com Ettalue Fernelius Nelson, 84, died peacefully at home in Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 12, 2011 after a long illness. Born Feb. 1 1, 1 927 in South Ogden (Burch Creek), Ettalue was tne third of four children of Cleavy Abraham and Etta Kendell Fernelius. She attended Weber County High · School and graduated in 1947 from Weber Stale College where she studied music and was a member of the Mussettes. At WSC she was chosen as Snowball Queen and Sweetheart of Phoenix (Men's Club) and loined La Dianaeda Sorority, where she developed lifelong friends. She was also queen of the July 24 parade in South Ogden. In 1 946 she met Richard John Nelson at the Clearfield Naval Depot where both had summer jobs. They married on June 1 0, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After Ettalue's graduation and Richard's graduation from medical school, the couple began married life and their 63-year partnership in Cambridge, Mass., and later New York City. R.J. completed postgraduation studies at liarvard and Columbia universities while Ettalue . worked to support them. Capt. Richard J. Nelson entered the Army Medical \ Corps and the cQuple moved to Ft. Sill, OK., where Ettalue gave birth to their first son, Harry Fernelius. Later, a dau9hter, Suzanne, and two more sons, Eric Byrne and Kendell Eschler, followed.Returning to Salt Lake, R.J. set up his private practice in internal medicine. Ettalue supported his work and many other endeavors, continually playing dream maker to R.J. the dreamer. They worked hard but traveled the world. A graceful, smiling lady, Ettalue was equally at home entertaining in Salt Lake, enjoying summers with family at their Vidor, Idaho, cabin or spending winter weekends at an Alta ski cabin. Musically talented, Ettalue played the violin, viola and piano and had a beautiful singing voice. Devoted to the arts, she was a member of the Utah Symphon)' Guild Board and a docent at the Salt Lake Arts Center and University of Utah Museum of Fine Arts. The U. presented her with special medallions for 25 and then 30 years of service, the first docent to receiVe that honor. She was a member of a 30-rear doubles foursome at the Salt ake Tennis Club and also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Ettalue was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include husband, sons Harry (Jeanette) Nelson and daughter Suzanne Pisciotta of Salt Lake City; son Eric Nelson, Victor, Idaho; son Kendell Nelson, Salt Lake City; grandchildren Michael John.and Sarah Nelson, Salt Lake City; Diego Pisciotta, Salt Lake City; Leanne (Scott) Coleman, Lehi, and Kendra Nelson, Salt Lake City; Elder Skyler Nelson servin9 in the Santiago Dominican Republic Mission; Elder Scott Nelson serving in the Wellington New . ~eal~!ld !li!~~ion; _ a. great.: |
