Show he says. He is at the height of his funk. She is looking beautiful and smiling and being sexy. He is feeling foul and trying to be ugly. She asks him what's for supper. Spaghetti, he says. Out of a can. She looks at him and tilts her head, grins; offers to clean the paint off his back. Morgan says nothing and so she begins. They eat spaghetti out of a can and it tastes terrible; they drink Olympia beer. She will not stop smiling, an innocent little-girl smile that makes Morgan feel darkly mature and indecently superior; he will not be nice to her. Dave comes in and takes a shower, sits for a while and talks, then says he is off to the races. He is being serious, is indeed going to the track, but Morgan knows that it is also an excuse, that Dave thinks he is doing him a favor by leaving them alone. Did you want the job in Denver? Anne asks. I don't know, he says, I don't know what I fucking wanted. Well there's no point in being pissed off about it, she says, what can I do to cheer you up? She suggests they go into Centerville, where they end up drinking more beer and playing pool and where she ends up winning more than Morgan figures she ought to win. Nonetheless, by the end of the evening he feels better and knows that she is the only reason why. Despite what Dave said, she is clearly a good woman. On the way back to the farm they smoke a joint which Anne takes, already rolled, from her purse; and when they are back in the house she does not beat around the bush. Let's go to bed, she says. |
